If you are applying for an Australian student visa (Subclass 500) from Indonesia, there is a good chance you will need to complete a health examination before your visa is approved. The key to that process is your HAP ID: a unique identifier the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) uses to link your visa application to your medical results. This 2026 guide covers what a HAP ID is, how to get one, and how the health examination process works for Indonesian student visa applicants, including a step most people miss.

What Is a HAP ID?
A HAP ID (Health Assessment Protocol ID) is a unique reference number issued by DHA when your visa application requires a health examination. It connects your visa file to your medical records inside the eMedical system, the digital platform that approved panel physicians use to submit your results directly to the Department.
Your HAP ID comes with a referral letter that lists the exact tests required for your specific circumstances. Your age, visa type, and country of origin all affect what is on that list. Without the HAP ID, an approved clinic cannot locate your case in eMedical, and your results will not be linked to your visa application. Bring it to every appointment.
Does the Student Visa Require a Health Examination?
For Subclass 500 student visa applicants, the health examination requirement depends on your country of origin and intended length of stay. Indonesia is classified by DHA as a high tuberculosis (TB) risk country, based on WHO data referenced on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. This means:
- If you plan to stay in Australia for 6 months or more (which applies to virtually all full-time students), a health examination is required.
- This applies whether you are applying offshore from Indonesia or onshore inside Australia.
The examination is not a test of general fitness. DHA assesses whether you meet Australia’s health requirement: primarily screening for communicable diseases, particularly active TB, and checking whether your projected healthcare costs would exceed the Significant Cost Threshold of AUD 86,000 (effective 1 July 2024, per immi.homeaffairs.gov.au). Most applicants pass without issues.
Two Ways to Get Your HAP ID
There are two paths to the HAP ID. One is the standard approach; the other is faster and specifically recommended for student visa applicants.
Option 1: After You Lodge Your Visa Application (Standard Path)
Once you submit your Subclass 500 application through ImmiAccount, DHA reviews your details and determines whether a health examination is needed. If it is, DHA sends a Request for Health Examination letter to your ImmiAccount. This letter contains your HAP ID, a list of specific tests required, and instructions for booking with an approved provider. You then have a set timeframe to complete the examination.
If you cannot attend within that timeframe, notify DHA through ImmiAccount by attaching a written explanation before the deadline.
Option 2: Complete the Examination Upfront via My Health Declarations (Recommended)
Here is what most competitors miss: DHA specifically recommends that student visa applicants complete health examinations before lodging their application, to avoid delays in processing. You can access the My Health Declarations (MHD) service on ImmiAccount to answer a set of health history questions and generate a HAP ID without first submitting your visa application.
Once you have your HAP ID from MHD, book and attend your examination with an approved provider. When you lodge your Subclass 500 application, your health results are already on file. This is the faster path.
One timing rule to keep in mind: results obtained via the upfront option are valid for 12 months from the date of examination. If you complete the medical too early and your course start is delayed, you may need to repeat the tests. Plan accordingly.

What Tests Are Required?
The exact tests depend on your age, visa type, and country of origin. For most Indonesian Subclass 500 applicants, the standard requirements are as follows, per DHA’s health requirements page (as of May 2026):
| Age Group | Required Tests |
|---|---|
| Under 2 years | Medical examination |
| 2–10 years | Medical examination + TB screening test (TST or IGRA) |
| 11–14 years | Medical examination + chest X-ray |
| 15 years and above | Medical examination + chest X-ray |
Additional tests may apply if you intend to work or study as a doctor, dentist, nurse, or paramedic (hepatitis B and C, HIV test), or if specific health conditions are identified during the examination.
Your HAP ID referral letter will list exactly what you need. Do not book extra tests beyond what is on that list.
Booking Your Appointment: Bupa MVS vs Overseas Panel Physicians
You must book with a DHA-approved provider only. Results from non-approved clinics are not entered into eMedical and will not count towards your visa.
If you are in Australia: All visa health examinations within Australia go through Bupa Medical Visa Services (Bupa MVS). Book online at bupamvs.com.au or call 1300 794 919. You will need your HAP ID to complete the booking. Allow approximately 2 hours for the full examination. Fees are paid upfront.
If you are in Indonesia (or elsewhere offshore): Use the panel physician finder on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au to locate DHA-approved clinics in Indonesia. Bring your valid passport, HAP ID referral letter, and any relevant medical records to your appointment.
Estimated costs as of early 2026 (Bupa MVS rates, subject to change; verify on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before booking):
| Test | Approximate Fee (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Standard medical examination | $340–$390 |
| Chest X-ray | $120–$150 |
| Blood tests (HIV, hepatitis B, creatinine) | $90–$130 each |
All costs are your responsibility. DHA does not cover health examination fees. For overseas clinics, confirm pricing directly with your panel physician before attending.
After the Examination: eMedical and What Happens Next
Your panel physician or Bupa MVS submits results electronically through the eMedical system to DHA. You do not need to upload or courier anything. Track your health assessment status in ImmiAccount under “View Health Assessment.” Processing typically takes several days to a few weeks, depending on whether a specialist review is required.
Three things to know about outcomes:
- Health requirement met: your application moves to other assessment criteria without delay.
- Further information requested: the Medical Officer of the Commonwealth (MOC) may ask for additional tests or a specialist report. Respond promptly, as delays here can stall your whole application.
- Health undertaking required: you may be asked to agree to specific medical follow-up once in Australia. This does not mean a refusal.
If your visa takes longer than 12 months to be decided and your results expire, DHA may require you to repeat the examination.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What does HAP ID stand for?
HAP ID stands for Health Assessment Protocol ID (sometimes referred to as Health Assessment Program ID). It is a unique identifier issued by the Department of Home Affairs that links your visa application to your health examination records in the eMedical system. Without it, a panel physician cannot locate your case or submit your results.
Do I need a health examination for an Australian student visa as an Indonesian applicant?
Yes, in most cases. Indonesia is classified by DHA as a high tuberculosis risk country. Subclass 500 student visa applicants from Indonesia who intend to stay in Australia for 6 months or more are generally required to complete a health examination, including a medical exam and chest X-ray, as per immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
Can I do the health examination before I lodge my student visa application?
Yes. DHA specifically recommends that student visa applicants complete health examinations upfront, before lodging, to avoid processing delays. You can access the My Health Declarations service on ImmiAccount to generate a HAP ID without first submitting your visa application. Results remain valid for 12 months.
Where can I have my visa medical done in Indonesia?
You must attend a DHA-approved panel physician in Indonesia. Approved clinics are listed on the panel physician finder at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. You cannot use a general practitioner or a non-approved clinic. Results from unapproved providers are not accepted by the eMedical system.
How much does the Australian visa medical examination cost?
Costs are paid out of pocket and vary by location and tests required. For applicants attending Bupa Medical Visa Services in Australia, typical fees as of early 2026 are approximately AUD 340–390 for a standard medical exam, AUD 120–150 for a chest X-ray, and AUD 90–130 for blood tests. Fees at overseas panel physicians vary by country and clinic.
How long are my health examination results valid?
Health examination results are valid for 12 months from the date of examination. If your visa decision takes longer than 12 months, DHA may ask you to repeat the examinations. If you are required to sign a health undertaking, results may only be valid for 6 months from the date of examination.
