Subclass 190 & 491 Visa Processing Times Update

Subclass 190 & 491 Visa Processing Times Updated: What It Means for Your PR Plan

Table of Contents

As of March 25, 2026, Australia has released updated processing times for two of its main skilled migration visas, Subclass 190 and Subclass 491. While this may seem like a routine update, it signals a shift in how the migration system is moving.

More importantly, it affects how you should plan your pathway to permanent residency.

Latest Processing Times for Subclass 190 and 491

Subclass 190 Visa

  • 50% of applications processed in ~10 months
  • 90% processed in ~15 months

This reflects a noticeable improvement compared to previous periods, where processing delays were longer due to backlog.

Subclass 491 Visa

  • 50% of applications processed in ~12 months
  • 90% processed in ~28 months

Although still slower than the 190 visa, this indicates gradual progress in clearing older applications.

What This Update Actually Means

Faster processing times do not mean it is easier to get the visa.

Processing time only reflects how quickly applications are finalized after receiving an invitation. It does not impact:

  • eligibility
  • points score
  • likelihood of receiving an invitation

However, there is a more important signal behind this update.

Backlogs Are Reducing — And That Matters

The improvement in processing times suggests that Australia is slowly reducing its application backlog.

This matters because:

  • fewer pending applications increase system capacity
  • increased capacity can lead to more consistent processing
  • it may support better allocation planning in upcoming periods

Although nomination places were limited this financial year, this trend could indicate stronger opportunities in the next cycle.

190 vs 491 — Don’t Choose Based on Speed Alone

It is a mistake to choose a visa purely based on processing speed.

  • Subclass 190 offers direct permanent residency, but is highly competitive and requires state nomination
  • Subclass 491 is a regional pathway with longer processing and additional conditions before PR

The right option depends on your profile, not just timelines.

What You Should Do Now

This update is not a signal to rush, it is a signal to prepare.

If you are planning for Australia PR:

  • check occupation eligibility
  • calculate your points
  • identify the most realistic visa pathway

If you are not eligible yet:

  • improve your English score
  • gain relevant work experience
  • consider alternative pathways if needed

Don’t Wait Until Invitations Open

Most applicants prepare too late, after the invitation rounds improve. At that point, competition is already high.

Preparation should happen before opportunities increase.

Plan Your Strategy Before You Apply

Improving processing times is a positive development, but it only benefits those who are ready.

If you are unsure whether Subclass 190 or 491 fits your profile, the first step is to understand your options.

A migration strategy consultation can help you:

  • evaluate your eligibility
  • identify realistic visa pathways
  • plan your next steps toward PR

If you want to take advantage of upcoming opportunities, start with a clear strategy, not assumptions.
