How to Extend Your Student Visa in Australia: A Complete Guide

Table of Contents

Student Visa Extension – Studying in Australia is an exciting journey, but for many international students, the time comes when their student visa is about to expire, yet their journey isn’t quite finished. Whether you need more time to complete your current course, you’re moving on to a higher level of study, or you’ve decided to take on a new program entirely, extending your stay in Australia legally and smoothly is essential.

Why You Might Need to Extend Your Student Visa

There are several reasons why students apply for a visa extension. Some students need more time to finish their course due to unexpected delays. Others may have changed their program, upgraded from a diploma to a bachelor’s degree, or decided to pursue further studies like a master’s program. Regardless of your reason, the process of extending your stay starts with preparing the right documents and applying through the correct channels.

When Should You Start the Process?

It’s important not to wait until your current visa has nearly expired. Ideally, you should begin preparing at least 2 to 3 months before your visa’s end date. This gives you time to gather the required paperwork, receive your new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), and submit your application without rushing.

If you submit your application before your current visa expires, you’ll likely be granted a Bridging Visa A. This visa allows you to stay in Australia legally while your new application is being processed.

What You’ll Need to Prepare

Extending a student visa requires submitting a new application and providing updated documentation. The most common documents include:

  • A new CoE from your education provider
  • Proof of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) that covers your extended stay
  • Genuine Student (GS) Requirement explaining why you wish to continue studying in Australia
  • Evidence of financial capacity to support your stay
  • Valid passport
  • Academic transcripts or progress reports (in some cases)

Depending on your situation, the Department of Home Affairs may request additional documents.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

The application is made online through your ImmiAccount, the same platform used when you first applied for your student visa. Once you log in, you’ll need to:

  1. Start a new application for a Student Visa (Subclass 500)
  2. Upload the required documents
  3. Pay the visa fee (AUD $2,500 as of July 2026, with additional charges if applicable)
  4. Submit your application and await confirmation

After submitting, monitor your email and ImmiAccount regularly for updates or requests for further information.

What Happens After You Apply?

While waiting for your new visa decision, your Bridging Visa will allow you to stay in Australia legally. It’s important during this period to continue meeting your visa obligations—such as attending your classes, maintaining academic progress, and holding valid OSHC.

Things to Watch Out For

A common reason for delays or rejections is incomplete documentation, especially outdated or missing CoEs. Also, be mindful of your health insurance; it must match the duration of your new course. Another key factor is your GS requirement—it should clearly explain your intentions and show that your primary purpose in Australia is to study.
