Why is the English Test So Important for Your Visa?

For those of you wanting to apply for an Australian skilled migration visa, the English proficiency test isn’t just a formality. It is an absolute, non-negotiable requirement.

For popular visas like the Subclass 189, 190, and 491, you must demonstrate at least a ‘Competent’ English level for your application to even be processed.

However, the role of the English test goes beyond just meeting this minimum standard. A higher score will grant you additional points in Australia’s visa points system.

The higher your total points, the greater your chance of receiving an invitation to apply. Because of this, improving your English score is often the most strategic way to make your application far more competitive.

English Proficiency Levels & The Points You Get

The Department of Home Affairs categorises English ability into different levels. Understanding these is key, as each level unlocks a different number of points for your application. Let’s break them down.

Competent English (0 Points)

Think of this as your entry ticket. It’s the absolute minimum level you must prove to be eligible for a skilled migration visa.

While meeting this standard is essential, it does not add any extra points to your score. It simply opens the door, allowing your application to be considered.

Proficient English (10 Points)

This is a fantastic goal for most applicants as it demonstrates a strong, well-rounded command of the English language.

Achieving this level will add a very valuable 10 points to your total score, significantly strengthening your profile and increasing your chances of an invitation.

Superior English (20 Points)

This is the top tier of English ability recognised for migration points. It shows that you have an expert-level, fluent command of the language.

Earning a ‘Superior’ English score gives your application a massive advantage with 20 extra points. This can often be the deciding factor that sets you apart from other candidates.

What Tests Are Accepted & What Are the Minimum Scores?

A common question we get is, “Do I have to take IELTS?” The good news is that the Department of Home Affairs accepts results from several different English language tests for your skilled migration application.

The main accepted tests include IELTS (both Academic and General Training are accepted), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET (specifically for health professionals), and Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE).

To make it easy, here is a chart breaking down the minimum scores you need for the three most common tests to achieve each proficiency level. Note that for IELTS and PTE, you must achieve the minimum score in each band or component of the test.

Proficiency LevelPoints AwardedIELTS (each band)PTE Academic (each)TOEFL iBT
Competent0650Listening: 12, Reading: 13, Writing: 21, Speaking: 18
Proficient10765Listening: 24, Reading: 24, Writing: 27, Speaking: 23
Superior20879Listening: 28, Reading: 29, Writing: 30, Speaking: 26

A crucial point to remember is that your test results are generally valid for three years, but you must check the specific requirements for your visa subclass. You must have a valid test result at the time you receive your invitation to apply for the visa.
