Beware of Work in Australia Scams: No Fake IELTS, No Shortcuts, Only Legal Visas

Table of Contents

If a fake agent tells you that you can work in Australia easily, without IELTS, without skills, and without the right visa, the offer is not true. Every legal pathway to work in Australia requires a genuine English test result, qualifications or skills that match an eligible visa, and a visa granted by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). This guide explains the false promises that fake agents use, why a fake IELTS certificate can ban you from Australia for years, and the legal visa pathways that Indonesians can actually use.

Working in Australia Is Not Easy: What Fake Agents Promise

Fake agents advertise work in Australia on TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp groups. The offers sound simple. The reality is different: Australia selects workers through a visa system with clear requirements, not through informal recruiters.

Common False Promises

Be careful when an agent says any of the following:

  • “No IELTS needed.” Most work visas require a genuine English test result.
  • “No skills or experience needed.” Skilled and sponsored visas require an eligible occupation and proof of your skills.
  • “You can work on a tourist visa.” The Subclass 600 Visitor visa does not allow work. You can read more in our guide on whether you can work in Australia on a tourist visa.
  • “Job and visa guaranteed.” No agent can guarantee a visa. Only DHA decides.
  • “Age up to 60 is fine.” Most skilled visas have an age limit of under 45 when you are invited or nominated.

A Real 2026 Case: The Fake IELTS Scheme in Kulon Progo

In June 2026, police in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, uncovered a scheme that sold IELTS certificates without an official test. The victims were job seekers from Central Java who wanted to work in Australia. Harian Jogja reported losses of around Rp40 million.

Why a Fake IELTS Certificate Will End Your Visa Plan

A fake English certificate does not only fail. It can block you from Australia for years.

English Test Rules Are Strict

DHA accepts several tests, including IELTS, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT. For the skilled visas (Subclass 189, 190 and 491), you need at least Competent English, which means IELTS 6.0 in each of the four bands. Since August 2025, tests taken at home or online are not accepted for Australian visas. You must sit the test at an approved test centre. See the full English requirements for Australian visas for each visa type.

PIC 4020: The 3-Year and 10-Year Visa Bans

Most Australian visas include a rule called Public Interest Criterion 4020 (PIC 4020). Under PIC 4020, DHA can refuse your visa if you provide a bogus document or false information.

  • 3-year ban: a refusal for a fake document, such as a fake IELTS result, usually stops you from getting most Australian visas for 3 years.
  • 10-year ban: if the fraud relates to your identity, the ban is 10 years, with no waiver.
  • Family impact: family members included in your application can be refused with you.

Important: a fake agent can disappear. The refusal and the ban stay on your record, not on the agent’s record.

Skills Come First: Qualifications, Skills Assessment and Work Experience

Australia issues work visas to fill real skill shortages. For that reason, DHA checks your skills before it grants most work visas.

For skilled and employer-sponsored visas, you usually need to:

  1. Choose an eligible occupation on the relevant occupation list, such as the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
  2. Complete a skills assessment with the correct assessing authority, such as VETASSESS, TRA or Engineers Australia. Learn which authority assesses your occupation.
  3. Prove relevant work experience with payslips, contracts and reference letters.

A missing skill cannot be replaced by a payment to an agent. It can be replaced by study, training or work experience. Our guide on the full requirements to work in Australia explains this in detail.

Not sure if your skills qualify? Book a consultation with RACC Indonesia and get an honest assessment before you spend money.

The Legal Visa Pathways to Work in Australia

These are the main legal pathways for Indonesians who want to work in Australia.

Subclass 482: Skills in Demand Visa

The Subclass 482 visa lets an approved Australian employer sponsor you. For the Core Skills stream, your occupation must be on the CSOL, and your salary must meet the Core Skills Income Threshold of AUD 79,499 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026. You also need relevant work experience and an English test result. After 2 years, many holders move to PR. See our guide on the Subclass 482 to PR transition.

Subclass 494: Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa

The Subclass 494 visa is for workers sponsored by an employer in regional Australia. It usually requires a positive skills assessment, Competent English and at least 3 years of relevant work experience. Read the Subclass 494 skill requirements.

Subclass 189, 190 and 491: Points-Tested Skilled Visas

These visas do not always need an employer. You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), and you need at least 65 points, a positive skills assessment, Competent English and an age under 45. The Subclass 190 and 491 visas also need state or regional nomination.

Subclass 186: Employer Nomination Scheme

The Subclass 186 visa is a permanent visa through employer nomination. Many workers reach it after 2 years on a Subclass 482 visa. Read what you need to know about the 186 visa.

Subclass 462: Work and Holiday Visa

The Subclass 462 visa is for Indonesians aged 18 to 30. You need a tertiary qualification or 2 years of undergraduate study, functional English (usually IELTS 4.5) and at least AUD 5,000 in funds. Indonesia’s annual cap is 5,000 first visas, and Australia has approved a ballot system. Check the latest WHV ballot requirements for Indonesians.

Subclass 500 to Subclass 485: The Study Pathway

The Subclass 500 Student visa allows limited work during study. After graduation, the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa can give you full work rights. This migration and study pathway suits people who need new qualifications first.

The table below compares these visa pathways.

Note: the Subclass 600 Visitor visa is not on this list because it does not allow work. On 17 September 2026, Immigration Minister Tony Burke also announced a plan to add a “no further stay” condition (8503) to visitor visas. Read what Burke’s new rules mean.

How to Check Whether an Agent Is Legitimate

In Australia, only a registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner can legally charge you for visa help, according to DHA. Before you pay any agent to help you work in Australia, complete these checks:

  • Ask for the agent’s MARN (Migration Agent Registration Number) and search it on the OMARA Register of Migration Agents.
  • Ask which visa subclass the agent will lodge. A real agent names the exact subclass and its requirements.
  • Ask for the employer’s name and ABN if the agent mentions a job offer.
  • Refuse any offer to “arrange” an IELTS result without a real test.
  • Report suspicious offers to Scamwatch.

For more warning signs, read our article on how to avoid visa scams with a registered migration agent.

Important: RACC Indonesia Does Not Offer Jobs

RACC Indonesia is a migration and education consultant. RACC Indonesia does not offer jobs, does not recruit workers, and does not search for jobs in Australia on behalf of clients.

  • RACC Indonesia does: give visa advice, assess which visa pathway fits your profile, help with study plans in Australia, and prepare and lodge visa applications as a registered migration agent.
  • RACC Indonesia does not: sell job vacancies, promise job placements, or charge a fee to “find” you an employer.

To work in Australia, you must find the job yourself. You can apply directly to Australian employers through their company websites or through job platforms such as SEEK and LinkedIn. When a real employer agrees to sponsor you, RACC Indonesia can then help with the visa application.

Warning: if a person or social media account offers you a job in Australia and uses the name “RACC”, that offer does not come from RACC Indonesia. Contact RACC Indonesia directly through the official website, racc.co.id, to check.

How RACC Indonesia Can Help You

We often meet clients after a fake agent has already taken their money. Many paid for a “guaranteed” job, then learned that no visa was ever lodged.

RACC Indonesia’s consultants are MARA-registered migration agents (MARN 1572961) with 20 years of experience. We review your age, education, occupation and English score, then show you which legal visa pathway fits you and what you need to improve. Book a consultation with RACC Indonesia to plan your pathway safely.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I work in Australia without IELTS?

Most Australian work visas require a genuine English test result, such as IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT. Only limited exemptions apply, for example for passport holders from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland. Indonesian applicants usually need a real test result from an approved test centre.

What happens if I use a fake IELTS certificate?

Home Affairs can refuse your visa under Public Interest Criterion 4020. A refusal for a bogus document usually means you cannot be granted most Australian visas for 3 years. If the fraud relates to your identity, the ban is 10 years. Family members in your application can also be refused.

Can I work in Australia on a tourist visa?

No. The Subclass 600 Visitor visa does not allow work in Australia. Working on a tourist visa can lead to visa cancellation, removal from Australia and a ban on future visas. In September 2026 the Australian Government also announced a plan to add a “no further stay” condition to visitor visas.

Do I need skills to get an Australian work visa?

Yes. Skilled and employer-sponsored visas require an eligible occupation, relevant qualifications or work experience, and often a positive skills assessment. The Subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa does not require a skilled occupation, but Indonesian applicants still need tertiary education, functional English and at least AUD 5,000 in funds.

How do I check if a migration agent is registered?

Ask the agent for their Migration Agent Registration Number (MARN). Then search that number on the Register of Migration Agents managed by OMARA. In Australia, only registered migration agents and Australian legal practitioners can legally charge for visa help. RACC Indonesia’s MARN is 1572961.

What is the easiest legal way for Indonesians to work in Australia?

No legal pathway is instant. For young graduates aged 18 to 30, the Subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa is the most accessible option. For skilled workers, employer sponsorship through the Subclass 482 visa is common. The right pathway depends on your age, education, occupation and English score.
